The Wellington Avalanche - 105 Years Later

PictureI took this picture. Note the orientation of the photo is the same as the orientation of how I held my phone.
We've had a very mild winter here in the Pacific Northwest. The ski areas mostly closed at the end of January, and the snow level is around 5,000 feet. While that spells disaster for hydroelectric power generation, it's also made mountain trails more accessible than usual. Wellington is no different.

This past Sunday was the 105-year anniversary of the Wellington avalanche. I've only ever had one other opportunity to get into Wellington on the anniversary, which was the 100-year anniversary back in 2010. On that date, we partially jeeped in and partially hiked in, and there was still a lot of snow.

This year was different. A group of us drove up Sunday morning in a large 4WD truck and drove all the way down the snow-free back road and into Wellington. The main road is still blocked by a large pile of plowed snow. The back road, while accessible, is very, very bumpy this year. If we'd gone in my small SUV, we would have high-sided on one of the huge ruts. In the large truck, however, we made it in.

The hill heading down the back road doesn't have any snow. However, when you get to the Old Cascade Highway, there is snow, although there are melted tire ruts, so you can make it through okay. Once in the parking lot at Wellington, there is about a foot of snow that is very pitted and icy. The trail to the snow shed has about a foot of snow on it, as does the trail to the Cascade Tunnel. Once you get to the bridge into the snow shed, the snow disappears. There is no snow on the west side of the snow shed, so the trail down to Scenic is relatively clear. I'd say if you plan to go, make sure you're in a high-clearance 4WD, and take the back road at your own risk. There is a very real possibility of getting stuck in spite of its snow-free status.

To me, going to Wellington is always sacred, but being able to visit and remember on the anniversary of the accident is always a moving time. We took flowers, as well as the things the spirits there seem to like best - whiskey and cigars. One of the members of our group felt overwhelming sadness through the entire snow shed, to the point that he was in tears the whole time. The minute we walked out onto the trail on the western side, his entire demeanor changed.

We also had the usual interesting equipment malfunctions. We had flashlights and lasers that came on without prompting - several times. A few of us went to take pictures, only to have the pictures snapped for us before we could pull the trigger ourselves. It happened to me three times, and what was weird about it was this: on the three pictures I didn't take myself, the orientation was off and couldn't normalize. So that was weird. Of course, there were also the random noises - footsteps behind us when no one was there, sounds of children laughing…the usual.

I'd say that the spirits still remain at Wellington - or at least come to visit quite a lot. I can feel them when I am there, as can many others. As always, they seem to find ways to ensure that newcomers to the site understand their story. They communicate in whatever way that person can understand. With my friend, it was through his emotions. Someone else may see something, hear something, or feel something, or simply understand something.

For me, when I take new people to Wellington, one of the most significant experiences I have is watching them as they "get" the place. It doesn't happen with everyone, but certain people have something come over them while they are there, and I can see and feel that they truly understand what is so special about Wellington.

It's been 105 years since the avalanche that took so many lives. It's been six years since I first went to Wellington myself. In that time, it has reminded me again and again that it is a sacred place that has a story to tell, if only you choose to listen.

Picture
This picture "took itself." I was holding the phone in its usual vertical position, yet the photo itself came out horizontal. While it lines up fine on this screen, on my phone it will only show up sideways on my camera. I wasn't hold my camera upside down, at an angle, or horizontally when I snapped this photo. Could be a phone glitch, but it only happened on the three photos I had lined up to take but that then took themselves.

My wife and I finally were able to go to Wellington this past Saturday. A very sobering place. You can really feel the story the moment you take your first footstep. The feeling of sadness was definitely there. All I could hear in my head was "this should have never happend" over and over. My wife felt of being around women in period clothing saying "why wouldn't they listen" over and over. Very humbling experience for us.

I went up here in late June 2015 about 9:pm as I arrived in the parking lot I got out of my rented ford edge with all the bells and whistles including power seats
All I had was a k-2 meter
I went over to the picnic table and said ....any spirits here?....
Nothing...so at 9;30 I started walking back to my rented SUV when all the lights on my k-2 meter lite up solid and stayed on, I stopped and as it was really nightfall now I just put the meter down on the seat next to me, still all the lights lite up solid
as I was about to put the key in the 6 way power seat started to go forward pushing me into the steering wheel
I quickly reached down and pushed the rocker switch button to make the seat go back again, I started driving out to the main road and the power seat once again started to go forward, I said "enough please"
and pushed the button back so the seat went back, the meter next to me was still lite up solid but eventually went back to the green light
I turned on my I pod plugged into the radio as I did not care to hear any visitors that may be riding along with me (no radio stations up there) and as I got down the mountain and over the railroad bridge the lights on the k-2 meter came on solid again, apparently my visitor moved from the back seat to the front seat but I saw nothing...as I parked my SUV and turned off the ignition the lights were still on solid
The next day I altered my schedule so I could go back up there
and this time something intelligent was interacting with me using the k-2, I asked it if it was a male or female and it backed off as requested many times then lite up the meter again , I asked if it was a railroad worker that used to work here and it lite up the meter as a yes, eventually It lite up the meter as it stayed next to me I guess and I said thank you and left while I was sitting next to the information kiosk I called back to the Avis rent a car people in downtown Seattle and asked the gal if they had any problems with this SUV and the agent said NO but I can direct you to a mechanic if you'd like, I said no, I rented the SUV for 5 days and never had any trouble with it, this Edge does not have the 3 settings remote control option
it was wierd that day about 2:30 in the sunlight, as I drove out I still had the k-2 meter on and as I was driving down the road back to highway 2 the lights on the meter would go on solid at certain places in the road then go out again, I stopped and backed up to them and the lights would all come on solid at these spots the go out again I backed up several times and once again the lights would all come back on at the spot at least 8 places on the road
Many people died on this road as portions of it used to be the old switchbacks before the old Cascade tunnel was built
As well the ranger at Skykomish tells me that about 5 years ago a young man was snowmobiling alone in from highway 2 and and was buried by an avalanche, as they found him he was partly buried I was told they are not sure what happened
Did you see the roadside memorial I was asked? I did not
I am hooked on this place, I have been here many times before and will be back with a camcorder and other equipment in late June
